President Traian Băsescu intends to give another chance to the Financial Guard and to the National Customs Authority, which he is considering keeping as they are until December 31st in order to test their ability to fight tax evasion.
"I would give another chance to these institutions until December 31st so they can prove whether they can fight tax evasion or not. I don't think that when an institution is going badly, you dissolve it. You have to make it work," said the head of state yesterday when the Public Service Ministry presented its review.
According to a draft Government decision, the Government is planning to reduce the number of positions in the Finance Ministry by nearly 5,200 and dissolve the Financial Guard and the Customs Authority, with their duties to be handed over to the National Fiscal Administration Authority (ANAF).
The President said the reasons for his reservation when it comes to reorganising these institutions were that he could imagine the Customs being stripped of its corporate powers and transferred into another institution, such as ANAF, that European partners do not know very much about.
